Empathy and Bedside Manner

I still want to write about hoops and chemistry, but I’m not sure how soon I will get to this… The last couple of weeks have been an exhausting roller coaster. More about that later! In the meantime, please consider checking out our new podcast! It is about 7 minutes long and is about empathy and bedside manner.

One of the exciting things about where we are at with the Procovery program, to date, is that we will soon be resuming training! For several years now the lion’s share of our work has been final stage testing of systemic implementation of the Procovery program. We have now completed this process (hubba hubba ding ding!) and we can return to many of the other important aspects of Procovery, including training!

Two of the many topics we will be again training on, are discussed on this week’s brand new podcast—Empathy and Bedside Manner. One of the discussion points we make in empathy trainings is that many people often confuse sympathy with empathy. But from a Procovery program perspective, this is a serious misunderstanding. From a Procovery program perspective, the difference between sympathy and empathy is a large one, it is the difference between drawing a line in the sand, between two people, or building a bridge, that CONNECTS people. Very few people tell us they want people to feel sorry for them, but most people tell us they want to feel UNDERSTOOD and cared for. From a Procovery program perspective, that is the difference between empathy and sympathy. The other topic this week, Bedside Manner, is also a topic of training. Bedside manner can change the outcome of even the simplest, shortest communications. How information is conveyed, the level of confidence exuded from professionals, whether professionals can hold the hope for someone, when maybe, they aren’t in a position to be holding it for themselves right now, all of these things feed in to bedside manner.
